The Member of Parliament made this statement after the Police Superintendent Subodh Prasad and Deputy Commissioner of Deoghar, K Ravi Kumar offered him a drink that evening.

Nishikant Dubey talking about Aruna Shanbaug

Aruna Ramchandra Shanbaug (1 June 1948 – 18 May 2015), alternatively spelled Shanbhag, was an Indian nurse who was at the center of attention in a court case on euthanasia after spending forty-two years in a coma as a result of sexual assault.

For 42 years Aruna Shanbaug lay comatose in a Mumbai hospital. She was the subject of a landmark court case about euthanasia that went all the way to the Supreme Court. There is a law that bears her name that allows passive euthanasia under strict conditions even though it could never be applied to her.

As the front-page coverage of her death shows, the Aruna Shanbaug case was hardly a low-profile one. Yet now that she is dead, we have no idea if the man responsible for putting her into that vegetative state is dead or alive.

The only thing we can be sure of is that he is not in prison.

Shanbaug was assaulted on 27 November, 1973. In 1980, Sohanlal Bhartha Walmiki the wardboy who assaulted her walked free into the world and disappeared. According to Pinky Virani’s book about Shanbaug , Walmiki was angry with her because she had accused him of stealing the food of the dogs used in medical experiments and threatened to report him.

Shanbaug died from pneumonia on 18 May 2015 after being in a persistent vegetative state for nearly 42 years.

A powerful earthquake rattled the South Pacific island nation of Papua New Guinea on Tuesday, generating a small tsunami near the epicenter, bringing down power lines and cracking walls, but causing no widespread damage.

A tsunami estimated at under one meter (three feet) was seen in the harbor of Rabaul, a town near the epicenter of the 7.5-magnitude quake, said Chris McKee, assistant director of the Geophysical Observatory in the capital, Port Moresby.

There were no reports of flooding, as the tsunami didn’t rise beyond the normal level of high tide, McKee said. The earthquake struck at a depth of 42km (26 miles), about 130km (80 miles) south of the town of Kokopo in north-eastern Papua New Guinea, the US Geological Survey reported, after issuing varying estimates of the quake’s power.

The earthquake brought down power lines in the Rabaul area, knocking out power to residents and to the local Geophysical Observatory office, McKee said. There were a few reports of structural damage in Kokopo, including cracks in some walls, but no reports of injuries, he said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said that tsunami waves of up to one meter (three feet) were possible within 300 kilometers (186 miles) of the epicenter, but lifted the warning a few hours later.

Nishikant Dubey – Who invented the piano?

googlepiano-007

Nishikant Dubey : Google’s latest doodle celebrates the 360th birthday of the man widely credited with inventing the piano.

Bartolomeo Cristofori was born in Padua on this day in 1655 in what was then the Republic of Venice.

According to Encyclopaedia Britannica, the instrument Cristofori invented was referred to during his lifetime as a harpsichord that plays soft and loud, from which its name is derived. In Italian, the phrase is gravicembalo col piano e forte.

On the blog dedicated to its doodles, Google wrote that one of Cristofori’s “biggest innovations was creating a hammer mechanism that struck the strings on a keyboard to create sound. The use of a hammer made it possible to produce softer or louder sounds depending upon how light or hard a player pressed on the keys”.

It added: “Being able to change the volume was a major breakthrough. And that’s exactly what doodler Leon Hong wanted to highlight in this interactive doodle.”
